Each player character in Rift: Planes of Telara has a base archetype, or calling, which is chosen during Character Creation.

In the Ascended class system, Soul Attunement is the character’s ability to commune with the souls of Telara’s honored dead and gain their powers and abilities. Each Calling encompasses a unique selection of souls that can be embraced by the character, providing nearly endless opportunities to discover the path that’s right for them! Callings determine which classes the player has access to, as well as defining the character's base mechanics, such as using energy, mana, or combo points.[1][2]
